Statutory Holidays Canada Discussion Forum 2018
Great website! So helpful and hilarious (see May Long write-up).
when you print the pdf for canadian holidays, it shows in brackets that family day if Feb. 11th in BC.
Is Boxing day a Statuary holiday in Ontario.
Please let me know.
Love that idea, Natasha Hiscock!! My fav time of the year!!
Since when has NB not been included in the Thanksgiving Monday holiday?
Hello, my Holiday suggestion is to make Halloween a statutory holiday. Children could trick-or-treat during the day, much safer. Could have various community events to participate in. ( pumpkin carving, costume contest, haunted house, etc.) Make a whole fun family day of it. Would love to see this happened. Would be a wonderful way to celebrate Halloween with children.
Could Halloween be the last Saturday in October? That way, halloween events that go late would be more fun as they wouldn't be on a weekend, and kids who trick or treat could go out a bit earlier and it would be safer in the daylight.
If my business is closed on the November 11, and I work on the Sunday is pay regular, time and a half or regular plus time and a half any info would be helpful
Does October 17th become a statutory holiday know since it's the day Canada legalized recreational marijuana? And does 10/17 become the new 4/20?
When you hire a new employee and they are on a 90 day probation period do you have to pay them stat holidays ? I know the rules say an employee has to work at least 30 days before they are eligible so does this mean that’s the minimum or the maximum before they have to be paid even though they are on a probation period?
When we will abolish daylight saving ?
Hello, there has been reports swirling around that June 21s is an observable holiday in Manitoba starting in 2019. Can you confirm this new change. Our workplace is wanting to know.
It should be mandatory for all businesses to close on stat holidays so that families can enjoy the holiday and it should be paid. Except for emergency businesses such as hospitals, police, fire department. Also Canada day is July 1st. Just my opinion.
what is the difference between a Federal holiday and a Provincial holiday
I can not find a schedule for Federal holidays.
Manitoba is missing Terry Fox Day.
I do not understand WHY you have changed the stat day for Canada Day! Why not Christmas, New Years, Remembrance Day! What is the difference, we still celebrate the Day on July 1. If you have weekends off, you always get the Monday as a stat day for any stat that falls on the Sunday. Why mess with the system! Is is very frustrating for people who work it and don't receive their stat pay... Please correct this issue. Thanks
My grandfather (1890-1974) used to recite a little ditty from Bictorian days:
"The 24th of May is the Queen's birthday
If we don't get a holiday we'll all run away".
Working in a nursing home 24/7 operation does the July holiday still change to the 2nd to be paid.
Working in Ontario.
Also working for Community living 24/7 operation does this still apply to them to be paid on monday the 2nd for the holiday
Canada day stat holiday on July 2nd means I will miss the celebrations on the 1st since our store will be open and I have to work that day. I am not happy! It should have been July 1st.
The August long week end is not known as Terry fox day
The terry fox run is on September after the labour day weekend
Never heard of the August long being called terry fox day in Manitoba
Hello. I live in province of Quebec. I have been working in the same place for 3 years. I am on vacation during the holliday Canada day. Does that mean that my emplyer has to pay me for the Canada day or can I take another day off with pay? If this is the case and what I actually prefer, by law is there a certain period of time following the hollyday that I have to take the extra day off with pay?
So after celebrating Canada Day on July 1 for the last 150 years someone comes up with this “brilliant idea” to move it to July 2 because it falls on a Sunday? Ridiculous!!
Hi there. I own a restaurant and would like to know if July 1 Canada falls on a Sunday this year. Is the stat holiday Sunday July 1 or is it Monday July 2?
I noticed that you have Victoria Day May 21 stated as Newfoundland do not recognize!! I’d greatly appreciate it if that can be corrected because we do recognize it!!
Is this a Canadian government website? If so, managed under which federal department?
I don't understand why the Queen's Birthday is not a paid holiday. It really should be paid. We work so much though out the year. I don't have time to enjoy life much because it's work at work and work at home. we needs more breaks so we can enjoy family and life. There should be a Family Day every month. Anyway, that's my 2 Cents. Thanks for reading!!
If you work night shift 2pm to 1am on boxing day does the company still have to pay time and ahalf same as 530pm to 530 am next morning?
Why is it that the maritimes is the only provinces not to observe Victoria day or Thanksgiving like the rest of Canada
Canada day is July 1 alaways has been check your date.... it's NOT July 2
I am trying to determine as a retail business are we allowed to open on Sunday July 1 and close on July 2? Or do we have to close on the Sunday. Thank you
RE: Canada Day July 2 move?? My kids work part-time and are scheduled to work Sunday July 1, and they both volunteered to do so because they know they would be paid double time to work hours on those days (Ontario). Why confuse people by putting a link/par that July 2 is Monday....there is a HUGE % of people who do NOT work Mon-Fri. This link/par is OVER-REACHING. Please clarify what is going on.
Wonder, why Easter not declared as a statutory holiday!!.
Disappointing a person is made to work on this day and not compensated, even after making all the family and religious sacrifices..
Trust there is some kind of balance made here
Canada day is July 1st not 2nd
WHY is Easter Sunday not a Stat Holiday?? It should always be. People should not have to work and business's should be closed. This shouldn't be negotiable ever.
I work 40 hours a week and am paid hourly. when a stat holiday falls on a weekday, I get a lower cheque because of it because we are paid out holidays and vacation pay on each cheque. Is this right...it's not a holiday if my cheque is less. who can I contact regarding this...I think we should get 8 hours on a holiday day.
With Good Friday and new laws are all employees paid Time and a Half if the are working that day we are a restaurant?
Thank you so for summarizing the Canadian statutory holidays. Just wanted to point out that your PDF download doesn't indicate Family Day in New Brunswick.
If i am working 4 days ON and 4 Days off, am I eligible to get stat holiday. My days of work different every week depends on my off's. What happens if I am working on Stat holiday and what will happen If I am not working on Stat holiday
I believe the rule with statutory holiday pay is that as long as you work your SCHEDULED day before and your SCHEDULED day after the statutory holiday you can't be penalized by not getting paid for the stat day.
On another note, my workplace pays statutory holiday pay based on totalling the hours you worked in the preceding month, (excluding Saturdays & Sundays), and dividing it by 20 to get average number of hours worked.
(As there are a minimum of 20 days in all months). I'm not sure how they came up with this formula but thats how they do it.
I have question in calculating the annual leave pay. Starting from this year, the employee works for the same company for over 5 years will entile to enjoy the 15 days annual leave. If he/she takes the annual leave by 5 days in 3 times in Mar, Apr and May (That means not contineously in 15 days). How I calculate his/her daily annual leave pay ? The last year income to divide 15 days or ?? Please educate, thanks in advance.
We do not automatically get the stat holidays...we need to put in a request for a specific stat off....otherwise we work all stats
Where did you get your information for your Canadian Holidays? Several of them are wrong. Boxing Day, for instance, in stat nationally, not just in ON.
Victoria Day is stat in NS (and likely nationally, given that the whole country is 'The Colony)
QC does not celebrate Easter? That is not likely true either.
I have a couple questions about family day. I know we aren't Americans, but we do cater to them in many ways. My qquestions are, why don't we have family day the Monday following the Super bowl? Just like thanksgiving, football is a great time to be with family and friends. If we did the holiday the week after, people won't be as willing to travel to see family. Also, why are we different days from other provinces? This holiday needs to pick it's game up. It's out of sync and misplaced.
If this is a public information page written by a public servant of Canada, all personal comments should respectfully be omitted. (Ie. turkey). Thank you, respectfully Dennis M.
I reside in Ontario. I found out recently that my employer has decided not to pay for stat. holidays if you add days to the stat holiday to make a week long vacation . Can they do this? I also heard that they said it's a new government law in 2018, haven't found anything on this yet to say its possible . Is this correct or is this a company not wanting to pay out.
Hello, I can not seem to wrap my head around this so sure would appreciate some help!. Up to December 11th I have worked Monday to Friday for 2 years.(last Monday worked was December 4,2017). Our office has since closed on Mondays and I was wondering if I still qualify for the stat pay for December 25th or Jan 1st now that they are regular days off. ??? (Dec 11th office hours changed to closed Sunday/Mondays. I work in a RV Park and storage lot.
Re Anon's message on Apr 5, 17, Israel observes holidays based on the cultural majority, Judaism, and if I chose to live there, I would need to accept and tolerate the practice, regardless of my own beliefs. People of religious minorities in Canada should have the right to negotiate reasonable accommodation of their varying days, perhaps by swapping days. (If they feel entitled to time off on their days, they should not claim days of a different faith, of course.)
Re May 16, 17 by Believer, the death of Christ on Friday is at least as important as His resurrection, because the death is the atonement and without that death, there would be no resurrection. I count Good Friday as at least as important as Christmas, if not more. As to Easter Monday, that's a non-sequitur, because Christ was resurrected on Sunday, by Roman count the third day after dying. Also Easter Sunday is ALWAYS on a Sunday, so it doesn't need a stat holiday; most other holidays migrate around the week, so they are given the following Monday so that they aren't "lost" as a day off.
